Sounds are transmitted as sound waves, travelling through the ear canal to the eardrum, causing it to vibrate. This vibration then moves three tiny bones in the middle ear, amplifying the vibrations as they pass through the inner ear (cochlea). The fluid in the cochlea is set in motion, and the vibrations are detected by special sensory hair cells, which send electrical signals through the hearing nerve to the brain, allowing us to hear!
