Earwax, also known as cerumen, is a yellow, waxy substance secreted in the ear canal. There are between 1000-2000 glands in the ear canal that secrete and deposit wax into the ear canal. It plays a vital role in the human ear by assisting in cleaning, lubricating, and providing protection from bacteria, fungi, and insects. Small hairs continually push the wax out, and the movement of the jaw helps with this process. If the wax becomes compacted, oil can help soften it to aid in natural removal. In cases where the wax is too compacted, micro-suction or irrigation may be necessary.
